This weekend marks a special moment for Sedgefield Rugby Club as the Saxons (2nd XV) step out for their first fixture of the season against Wensleydale 2s. The game coincides with the joint Beer Festival at Sedgefield Cricket Club, bringing together rugby, live music, and a celebration of the wider sporting community. The day will round off with the Women’s Rugby World Cup Final (England vs Canada) shown live.

Fresh Faces, Familiar Faces, Historic Colours

For the Saxons, this match has been a long time coming. The squad will feature plenty of fresh faces proudly pulling on the Sedgefield shirt for the very first time. Just as importantly, we’ll also be welcoming back a number of experienced Saxons returning to action — players who know what it means to wear the shirt and whose presence will be invaluable alongside the new blood.

Adding to the sense of occasion, the team will be running out in the green kit — introduced last year as a nod to the club’s original colours, first worn 41 years ago when Sedgefield was founded as Winterton Hospital Rugby Club. Saturday will be the Saxons’ first chance to wear the green in match action, carrying that history forward.

A Manager’s Perspective

From my own perspective, it’s bittersweet. I’m gutted not to be lacing up my boots for this one, as I’m heading away on a big trip and can’t risk injury. But I’ll be there on the sidelines, shouting loud and taking on a managerial role — backing the lads every step of the way.
