Sedgie made the journey to Redcar on a beautiful day with only two changes to the selected squad, Dan Martin had to work so in came Andy Broere and Tom Ducker had a family emergency so in came Bobby Blackburn.
We started well enough, putting pressure on Redcar immediately and making yards through our pack, within 5 minutes, we were ahead great driving from a lineout and patience allowed Dom Ryan to dot down for his first of the afternoon.
The pattern of the day would then follow.... Sedgie continued to dominate but Redcar turned us over and moved the ball really well. Sedgie defended really well but conceded on 20 mins when Redcars impressive number 9 found space to score. 7-5. Sedgie had loads of chances to score but often the last pass just wouldn't stick.
To compound this, Redcar intercepted a pass and ran almost the length of the pitch to close out the half 14 - 5 ahead.
The second half started badly, a speculative kick wasnt fielded and bounced straight into the grateful arms of Redcars centre who extended their lead. 21 - 5
It was a frustrating watch but then Sedgie started to keep the ball better and it paid off when Mitch Corney smashed over from 20 yards, to score under the posts, 21 - 12.
With 20 minutes to play we had our tails up and a strong break from Andy Broere, we moved it wide to Ryan Towler who made a great break and offloaded to Mitch Corney sent him flying down the pitch, this time his offload stuck and found Dom Ryan who scored under the posts, somewhat crucially the conversion was missed. 21 - 17.
Sedgie went in search of the winner and we almost got it but we got ourselves in a mess and Redcars 12 again intercepted and ran 80 metres, Adam Grieve and Jordan Portlock hunted him down but Redcar had the attack, We turned them over but then knocked on giving Redcar a 5m scrum. They moved it wide and Gaz Pratt made a great tackle over the line dislodging the ball, somewhat to our disbelief a Redcar player dived on the ball and the try was awarded, denying us a bonus point and giving Redcar one. We thought it was knocked on, the ref didnt... End of story.
Loads of effort again from our lads, on another day we would have won convincingly but fair play to Redcar they were clinical when it counted and profited from some of our mistakes.
Sometimes the rugby gods shine on you, sometimes they don't, today was one where it didnt, the last pass just wouldn't stick for us and we made some errors at crucial times.
Definitely points dropped for us but we will hope to bounce back with three games left to play, starting with Gateshead at home next week.
